Quick Tour of Lyon: Exploring France With a Local Friend

There’s sightseeing, and then there’s sightseeing with someone who used to live there. Instead of wandering around with Google Maps and sore feet, I got the inside scoop on Lyon, France from a fellow dancer-turned-tour guide. I mean, my legs still hated me, but at least I knew where to find the best street crepes.

I was in Lyon gearing up for a weekend of West Coast Swing dancing, but before hitting the dance floor, I had the perfect warm-up: a whirlwind tour of the city with a new friend from the wedding who used to live there.

We crisscrossed cobblestone alleys in Vieux Lyon, strolled along the Rhône, ducked into a street crêperie, and climbed way too many stairs. The city’s layers made of Roman ruins, Renaissance streets, river views, and modern neighborhoods all came alive with his stories from life there from before. Somewhere in between all the history and hilly walks, we snuck in a quick West Coast Swing demo right in the middle of the Roman amphitheater.

It was an easy breezy tour that was perfect for my energy level before going to the local West Coast Swing weekly social dance later that evening. I feel like I got to experience the highlights of Lyon and make it in time to rest before dancing all night long.

Here are some highlights from my quick tour in Lyon:
